The staff needs better training
A community member says family screening tools cannot make up for undertrained and unsupported staff.
In March 2026, I talked about Allegheny County Department of Human Services and the Allegheny Family Screening Tool in Pittsburgh. The tool is not the only issue. CPS staff need better training, better pay, and more real-life experience with families before they are sent into people's homes.
When workers are rushed or burned out, a risk score can become a shortcut. Families feel that. A parent who needs help gets treated like a threat, and a worker who does not have enough support leans on whatever the screen says. No model can fix a system that has not invested in the people using it.
